COWBOY HAT and we asked if we could give it away to the webmaster of the
finest EELS fan site. He recently bought a new hat so he said "why, sure!" If you're site is voted best by our committee, you will be the owner of the
original Butch hat! The one that started it all! Purchased at a truck stop in
Buffalo, NY during 1997's Lollapalooza tour and worn at virtually EVERY EELS
SHOW since. Some say Butch slept with that hat on. You can SMELL THE HISTORY
(hat will be fumigated before mailing). If you have a giant head, heck, you
can even WEAR IT around town! Modern Drummer Magazine has asked that the hat
be enshrined in their Hall Of Famous Drummer's Hats, but we are denying their

from DreamWorks Records. The album was pre-released Sept 24th, 2001 in England and Europe.

10/8/2001 RECORD COLLECTORS!:
All four EELS albums have been available on vinyl. But the
Vinyl copies (as well as CD and vinyl singles) are only available for a short
time and then it's pretty much impossible to find them ever again. So for
anyone considering a future post on the message board about someone please
helping them find the old singles or vinyl, our humble EELStheband.com advice
is BUY THE NEW SINGLES NOW and if you cannot find the gorgeous 12" UK vinyl
SOULJACKER album, with full color inside sleeve (the only place to get the
pink CD center spread photo 12" & 12" and in color, as well as another color
photo not used in the CD package), then here it is.
And what's more, you can still get the
U.S. Daisies Of The Galaxy vinyl, and that is no easy feat, my friend, right
here.

Well, in some places anyway. The album is out in much of Europe and England. Some countires are releasing it October 1st (Germany, Australia). Word is that the reviews are extremely positive. 9/20/2001 HAVEN'T SEEN THE NEW EELS VIDEO IN THE U.K.?:
Here's why: Apparently there is a long list of rules about what you can and can't do in a music video that is played in the United Kingdom. Here is an actual quote from the rules: "Dolls
and teddy bears should not be shown being hit, hung, mutilated or drowned in
videos between 4pm and 7pm in the UK." Check out the rules here and see how

Wim Wenders joined the EELS as a rare surprise guest at their Cologne, Germany show saturday night. Wim played the congas on several songs and sang on I Like Birds. Butch better be be careful. There's a legendary German director that rocks the congas and has his eye on Butch's drum stool...
9/10/2001 ENGLAND SWINGS:
If you happen to be in London this week, you may catch the
EELS here and there, and yes, that was them playing croquet in Hyde Park this
past weekend. Tonight, Monday the 10th, catch a live performance on BBC Radio
1 with Steve Lemacq, supposedly around 8:30pm. Tuesday the 11th, wake-up bright and early (the EELS have to, why shouldn't
you?) and catch them on The Big Breakfast TV show. We don't know what will
happen this time, but last time the EELS were served traditional English food
that they promptly vomited onto each other. Then catch E from 11-noon on the
Nicky Campbell Show on Radio 5.
Tuesday evening there's a live performance on Xfm, around 6:45pm.

CASHING OUT: From the music of Moby to the Who to the late Nick Drake, advertising has become a terrific stream of revenue for pop songs. Who wouldn't want to cash in?
Mark Everett, for one. The leader of the Eels, who generally goes by the
name E, has steadfastly refused what he says are weekly requests to use his
songs in commercials. So he was surprised on a recent trip to Spain to learn
that one of his songs, "I Like Birds," was the soundtrack to a TV ad for a
shopping center--and even more surprised to find that it had been authorized,
without his knowledge, by his music publisher.
"The song was recorded by someone else, but it even used a sample of our
record," he says. "It uses part of the song with the phrase 'I can't stand
waiting in line at stores' and showed the mall with no lines." Everett quickly had a restraining order sent to stop further airing of
the ad and is now considering legal action against Rondor Publishing, which
oversees his songs.
"Neither Rondor nor [parent company] Universal approved any licenses for
this commercial and we have instructed that it be pulled from the air
immediately," says Lance Freed, president of Rondor Music. "Unfortunately,
there was miscommunication with Rondor's unaffiliated Spanish sub-publisher
who sent the request. We certainly respect the wishes of Mark Everett and
have moved quickly to rectify the situation."
"I understand (licensing a song) if you can't pay your rent--I'd rather
sing about Taco Bell than work there," Everett says. "And Volkswagen actually
made an ad with my song 'Beautiful Freak' and sent it to me. It was really
good. But I just don't want that."
Having his music in movies, though, is another thing.
A few of his songs were used in "The Anniversary Party," for which he
also served as a soundtrack consultant at the request of co-star, co-director
and co-writer Jennifer Jason Leigh. And he's now writing music for a movie by
director Wim Wenders, in which he will also act, with filming planned for
next summer.
Meanwhile, Wenders directed the video for "Souljack(er)," the title song of
the upcoming Eels album, to be released in most of the world in September.
Release is now scheduled for January in the United States.

8/10/2001 SONG TITLE CONTEST: YOU'RE ALL WINNERS! Leave it to the EELS to find a way to make all of you, or at least many of you, a winner. You sent in many, many titles and we told the EELS to pick one and make a song with that title. As usual, they bent the rules a little, or just didn't understand the rules, and E actually wrote a song using MANY of the titles in the lyrics. So there are many winners!
The song is actually untitled (after all that!) and will appear on the
special bonus EP that comes with the UK edition of SOULJACKER and will
actually be a part of the Japanese SOULJACKER! Congratulate yourselves and
listen for your title to be mentioned in the song listed as "Hidden Track."
7/24/2001 THE BEGINNING OF WORLD WAR III Back in the 1900's, BEAUTIFUL FREAK came out in the U.S. in August of '96. The rest of the world didn't get it until early 1997. Well, now the rest of the world gets it's revenge on the U.S.: SOULJACKER will be released internationally Sept. 24. However, it will not be released in the U.S. until January.
Now, before you U.S. fans start complaining, know that the EELS have no
control over this. So don't blame them! If you're unhappy about it, direct
your calls to Dreamworks Records in Beverly Hills, CA. But you're going to
want to get an import of the english edition of SOULJACKER anyway because it
will have a special bonus EP of new non-album songs included with it!
And, if you REALLY want to get mad, then you should know that SOULJACKER
comes out in Japan before all the other countries! (unless you're japanese,
that is) (Sept. 11).
The first single, SOULJACKER part I, will be released Sept. 10. Watch for Wim
Wenders' SOULJACKER part I video soon.

7/4/2001 2001: A ROCK ODYSSEY
Wim Wenders is directing the first video from the upcoming EELS album in Berlin this weekend. So if you see some guys that look like EELS in Berlin, well, it's probably them. Then E goes to Paris and Madrid for a few days of press. And then it's back to L.A. for tour rehearsals. More to come...
5/14/2001 EELS IN THE MOVIES
Two new films feature EELS music: The Anniversary Party, written, directed & starring Jennifer Jason Leigh & Alan Cumming, features "Flyswtter," "It's A Motherfucker" and silverlake DJ, MC HONKY's "The Object," which was produced by E. In addition, E served as the film's "music archivist" and picked many of the records played at the party depicted in the film. The soundtrack album will be the only way to get MC HONKY's track "The Object" for the time being. And "My Beloved Monster" pops up in Mike Meyer's animated vehicle Shrek, also on the soundtrack album.
